Manchester City crushed Sporting CP in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League as they scored 5 goals. Bernardo Silva scored twice and assisted once and was named Man of the match. City manager, Pep Guardiola appreciated the performance of the midfielder and wishes Silva to renew his contract.
Last year, Silva was not given many minutes of game time by the manager. However, De Bryune’s injury made some space for the 27-year old and now, he has become one of the key members of the squad.
Pep Guardiola Hopes Midfielder Bernardo Silva Will Renew His Contract With City
Bernardo Silva has been playing some important role in Pep’s side this season. As we all know, Pep follows the rotation policy and doesn’t let his players play continuous matches so that they don’t get injured with fatigue. Despite that, Silva has made 6 appearances in 7 UCL games and 24 appearances in 25 Premier League games.
This season, Silva scored 7 goals in 24 Premier League matches. He is currently tied up with Riyad Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne on the 2nd spot for most goals scored in Premier League for Manchester City.
Silva stole the show against Sporting CP as he scored 2 goals and assisted once. All his goals came in the first half and his assist to Raheem Sterling was made in the 58th minute.
In the post-match press conference, Pep Guardiola appreciated the midfielder and shared his views on him. He said, “Bernardo Silva doesn’t just play football – he understands football. There are players that play good with the ball but he understands every action like few in the world”.

The numbers which Silva is putting up for Manchester City are huge as the Premier League defending Champions are looking comfortable to defend their title this season.
After the stunning 5-0 win, it looks like Manchester City has already won the tie. But, it never ends until the final whistle goes, so we’ll wait for the second leg.

Silva’s contract will end in 2025. However, due to lack of playing time, the midfielder was considering a move away from the Etihad Stadium. However, now it looks like City will be rewarding him with a new contract for the outstanding performance this season.
Pep Guardiola also expressed his desire in the post-match press conference that he wants the midfielder to stay at the club for many years.
