Despite Exciting Start IPL Sees A Massive Fall In TV Ratings After First week

The 15 edition of the Indian Premier League was expected to be grander than before with the addition of two new teams. The advertisers and sports marketing community are in concern after TV ratings of the TATA IPL has seen a massive drop of 33% in the opening week.

The league has great money earning potential for advertisers and players but this year’s story is different altogether.

From the BCCI’s point of view, these numbers are a nightmare for them as they will sell the media rights of the IPL, and also bidding will take place from the 12 of June for media rights of the IPL (2023-2027 IPL seasons)

Surely this downfall will affect the bidding process as BCCI is eyeing a bid close to rs 50000 crore rupees.

Disney+Hotstar, TV18-Viacom, Amazon, Zee, META, and Sony are some of the companies that will clash with each other in a bidding war.

WHAT DOES THE REPORT FROM BARC SAY

BARC defines reach as the total number of individuals who viewed the event for at least one minute, whereas TVR also accounts for time spent by viewers along with the reach

As per data from BARC(Broadcast Audience Research Council), the first 8 matches scored a TV rating of 2.52, compared to a TVR of 3.75 in the last season.

The reach of the week dropped by 14% to 229.06 million. In 2019 (pre covid time ) the overall reach was at 268 million and ratings were at 3.85 TVR

Unfortunately, only two matches – the season opener between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders and the match between Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Banglore- reached 100 million users each

Normally Star Sports 1 Hindi used to be most viewed during the IPL but now it has slipped to the 3rd spot in the 2022 season in the overall rankings of BARC which indicates a downfall.

WHAT IS THE REASON FOR MASSIVE FALL OF TV RATINGS OF IPL

Last year due to partial lockdown people were confined to their houses and it contributed to higher ratings but this when everything is back to normal people prefer OTT platforms to TV. Another reason could be people don’t find the league attractive and losing interest. Hope the ratings get back to normal.
