Change-1: Earlier, Ballon d’Or was given on yearly basis considering a player’s performance in the entire year. However, now according to the new rules, the award period will be for the European season. This means player’s performance from the start of the 2021-22 season will be considered for the award instead of the 2022 year.
Change-2: Another change in rules is that the award will consider players’ individual performance, collective performance, ‘class’ of the player, and their fair play record.
Change-3: When voting for the winners, a players’ performance for the previous year will not be considered.
Change-4: Only the representatives of the top 100 countries of FIFA rankings for men and top 50 for women will be qualified for the voting
This means, World Cup 2022 will not be considered while voting for this year and probably the best player from the tournament will get the award next year in 2023.

Lionel Messi has won the maximum number of Ballon d’Or in his career. However, his 7th trophy which he won in 2021 was quite controversial. In 2021, Messi had a good season with Barcelona but he won only one trophy with the Spanish club.
Notably, he won one of those trophies which were missing in his cabinet; Copa America. Messi was the top goalscorer and assist provider in the tournament and as a result, won the Ballon d’Or. According to few football pundits, the Polish striker Robert Lewandowski deserved the award more than Messi for his record-breaking goals in the German league.
The criticism became even stronger because Messi miserably failed in Ligue 1 where he joined in August. So, for the rest of 4-5 months, Messi didn’t perform up to the mark.
Looks like the questions on France football were quite many and reasonable and this is why the new changes are made.
What do you think, who will win the Ballon d’Or in 2022?
